A Benedictine abbey founded in AD716 by King Ethelbald of Mercia to the memory of St Githlac. The 15thC north aisle is now used as the parish church and an exhibition area. Amongst the magnificent ruins, a 12thC Norman arch survives and the 13thC west front, with 5 tiers of sculptures representing personages associated with the history of the abbey, saints and apostles. The tower also has historic bells.
